28.
INT. KITCHEN, JASON’S HOUSE – DAY

ZOE and EMILY are frozen in time. ZOE is stood at the counter and midway though cutting mushrooms, EMILY is sat at the table and midway through opening a tin of tomatoes.

JASON

(to himself)

I’m really dead?
(to LILITH)
Please stop this.

LILITH

Ready to go again?

LILITH clicks her fingers. ZOE and EMILY start to move again.

ZOE cuts her finger with the knife.

ZOE

Shit!

EMILY

Mum?

ZOE

It’s okay, baby. Mummy is just being clumsy. How are you getting on with those tomatoes?

EMILY

Almost done.

The tin shoots from EMILY’S grasp. It skims across the table and falls to the floor. Tomatoes and juice splash across floor.

EMILY

Oops! Oh… Oh! Sorry, Mum.

ZOE

(cold composure)

Don’t worry. I’ll clean it up later. Get another tin from the cupboard.

EMILY

It’s okay, mum, I’ll clean it up.

EMILY jumps down from her chair, grabs some tissue from a roll hanging on the wall, and sets about cleaning up the mess. EMILY opens a cupboard under the counter, next to ZOE, and takes out a new tin of tomatoes.

ZOE points with the knife at a blotch of tomatoes juice on EMILY’S dress.

ZOE

For heaven’s sake, Em. Look…

EMILY

Should I go change, Mum?

ZOE

(sigh)

No.

EMILY returns to the table and opens the new tin.

LILITH

Oh, isn’t it a beautiful thing. Your wife’s monster is waking up.

JASON

Please stop this. I’ll do anything, just don’t make my baby go through this again.

LILITH

I know you would, Jason. Now, be a good boy and observe in silence… Like stone, you might say.

JASON’S becomes paralysed.

ZOE

(staring out the window)

A new dress… It was a beautiful new dress. Yellow like the sun, like the buttercups my daughter picks. Beautiful and pure. Now, it’s dirty. Shit like everything else. Fit for nothing but the bin.

EMILY

Mum? It’ll be okay.

ZOE

Into the bin with the other rubbish. That’s where I’ll put it. It can be right again. Jason said we’ll sort it out… We can start again.

Emily jumps down from the table, puts the open tin on the countertop, and stands next to ZOE.

ZOE

Thank you.

ZOE pours the contents of the tin into the sink.

EMILY

What are you doing, Mum? Don’t you need them anymore?

ZOE

No, it’s shitty rubbish.

EMILY

I’ll go watch TV, Mum, and wait for Dad to come home.

ZOE

Okay, dear. But, can you see how dirty it all is? It wasn’t always like this.

EMILY

What’s wrong, Mum? Why are you saying those things?

ZOE

It’s all dirty. It’s all disgusting, shitty and… Your beautiful dress is ruined. It’s all ruined.

EMILY

(tearful)

I love you, Mum.

JASON squeezes his eyes shut.

29.
EXT. BACK GARDEN, JASON’S HOUSE – DAY

EMILY is watching a bee collecting pollen from a flower.

JASON (O.S.)

(frantic)

In the back garden. She was chasing the bees. She was talking to them, naming the furry little bastards.

EMILY

(to the bee)

I’m going to call you… Billy!

JASON (O.S.)

We were laughing together, in the garden. She was playing… In the fucking garden.

EMILY

(giggles)

Billy the bee.

LILITH (O.S.)

No, Jason. You’re going to watch it all.

30.
INT. KITCHEN, JASON’S HOUSE – DAY

EMILY turns to walk away.

ZOE picks up the marble cutting board and lifts it high above her head.

31.
EXT. BACK GARDEN, JASON’S HOUSE – DAY

EMILY reaches out, to touch the bee.

JASON (O.S.)

What’s that? Can you stroke them? No, don’t stroke them, baby. Aren’t they beautiful? Those busy little bees, aren’t they—
